HASTINGS RAM FAIR.
; "INCREASED ENTRIES. : BUT POOB SALES. ' : (BY TgLEGRAPH.—SPECIAI, COttKESroNDBNT.), . ■■■ ' : : i-■ ■-.-.; Hastings,'/ January 28. The annual ram-fair held under the auspices of the Hawke's Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society,. opened, on the show grounds in Hastings' this'morning.,: The entries this year, exceed , , those of.' the last fair ; by' between tnree; and four"hundred,' the increase beiug mainly in Lincolns, which occupied the attention of buyers to-day. The sheep offered included'some splendid rams, equal, if not superior, to last year, but,: of course, there was the usual per- ■ centage of inferior grades on the ground: .The bidding, was jery, lifeless throughout the day, and'little business was done under the hammer, although a number of rams were sold privately.. In. the studs, the best rams reached good prices; but the inferior sorts only brought nock figures, and, in' , a great many. instances, were passed in. A two-shear ram, the property of Mr. W. Gadsby, Manutahi, realised the highest price in studs, Mr. J; Fl.eming, of- Waipukiirau, being; successful with his bid of 42 guineas. The sale will be continued to-morrow, when all other breeds of flock and stud rams will be offered.
