. A- young'-man named. Baltrop, a passenger by tho up express train,, had a narrow es-. 'cape_from death in Ihe Mangamalioo tunnel .on Tuesday. It appears (says The Dojiin- • ion s Eketahuna- corrcspondtnt) that Baltrop, who was travelling to Palmerston North, : was- standing on. the- carriage platform when .no' turned to. enter the. carriage as the; train. ; approached the tunnel/ lu doing so ho sidestepped, and 1 ,, overbalancing,, foil from . tho j * r ?S Ii '■' luckily, ;hp- lauded ,' in tho water-, i table- without- serious injury, and, crouching low, ho remained where he- fell until the ! tram had passed By.. He, made a ifutilo' at ; tempt- to attract- tho- attention of the guard ! after;emerging from the. tunnel, but had to , walk to Ekctahuna, a distance 'of about three ; miles, and proceeded on his journey by tho next train-,-little the worse for'his hairibreadth escape. ■•■■•■: ' !
