NOTES FROM OTAKI.

•The, holiday on Friday passed quietly, all business places, evon those of Chinese (who were observing their New Year), being closed,'. _A.Victoria College.lawn tennis t-eam. paid their annual visit and Met members of the local club, whom they defeated by (he narrow; margin of tiro games. Many of the sets.were close and exciting, and, in a few 1 instances, fine play was witnessed. - The visitors left for home by the late train, after having spent an enjoyable day. The only other attraction was , the Methodist Sunday School picnic, held on Mr. Judd's property. Here parents', friends, and children assembled, and all spent a pleasant;;tinie.'. Visitors are arriving to take part iii the tangi. . ' ' ' . '•■■■.••■ A fine.residence is now in course of erection for Mr, R. D'Atli,'on Wairenga ■ Road, and when completed will be the best building in the township. Other firio residences have been recently erected for Mrs. Blakistoit, Mr. Herbert Jones, Mr. F. Jones, Mr. C. Bell, and others. The building trade, therefore, is fairly brisk, and the necessity has arisen for another tinsmith and plumber, who has now opened up in Otaki. :
