Hon. R. M'Kenzie, Minister for Pub-lic-Works, leaves for Auckland : this morning, via the West Coast. While in the northern' city, ho will attend to various matters affecting the Public Works Department.-;' He will also visit Hamilton and Franktori, in order to decide on a site for public buildings, concerning which there is a conflict of. opinion between residents of the two places named, which are about a mile apart. Mr. •M'Kenzie may also visit the Thames to inspect the Thames-Hauraki pump and investigate other matters' in which ho is interested as Minister for Mines. He expects to ibe back in Wellington nest Thursday night. He will leave very shortly afterwards to keep 'engagements at Nelson and Collingwood. ;
• Sfews . was. received. from Masterton last evening of the death of Mrs. Mary Camphell Bennington, wife of Mr. George Christopher Bennington, at the Masterton Hospital, whither she had been conveyed for special treatment, as a "result of an apoplectic seizure on January 11. The late Mrs. Bennington was the eldest daughter of the late Mr. Alexander Campbell M'Kenzie, one of the early Victorian pioneer settlers, and was born at Jan Juc (near Geelong), fiftyfour years ago. She came to Now Zealand with her husband and eldest son (Mr. N. J. Bennington, of The Dominion staff) in the old Arawatta in 1878. Deceased leaves two sons, two daughters, and husband to mourn the loss of a good mother and kind-hearted friend..
The Victoria College Council, at its meeting last evening, accepted tho resignation of Mr."H. D. Bell, K.C., who is vacating his soat as representative of the Professorial Board. Mr. Bell will leave for England in March next, and as his absoncowill extend over'-the limit prescribodby statute, he has found it necessary to resign, '■ Members of the council were in their expressions of regret, it being generally admitted that much of tbo success of tho negotiations which had in the past, been opened up between the council and tho Government had been due to the tact and acumen displayed by Mr. Bell. Members placed on record their desire that Mt. Bell should see his- way to resume his connection, with the college on his return.
