At a meeting of the Taranaki Executive of the Farmers , Union on Thursday, Mr, Allhusen read' the following extract from the London "Daily Mail" Overseas Edition, dated September 20, lpO8:— ■ ■■.-'•- ' "Not all the men who have led the Empire's troops to victory in the field come back to London to be feted and lionised. But •rarely has anyone fallen on such hard times as Colonel G. Hamilton Browne, Within thirty, years ■he put in fifteen years', hard fighting in If6w Zealand and South" Africa, yet his homo is now a London lodging-house. He is penniless, and'has-been of late on the verge'of starvation.'Ho is willing oven to black boots for a living. Unhappily his eervice has all been with' irregular colonial corps, so the War Offico has iio pension for lain.. The following, js a brief .. .outline ■of Colonel Browne's service:—' . . ■"New Zealand wars.from. 1866-1877, for which he holds• a. inedal; acted as commandant of irregular forces in the Guika Galicka and Zulu wars, 1877-1879,.f0r which he holds' medals and clasps; Bftsuto and. Timbuki wars, 1880-1881, medal and clasp; commander of'. squadron ,in Warren's expedition, T lßß4 ; adjutant of tho Diamond Fields Horse, 18861891;. Dinizulu's rebellion, 1888; chief staff officer, Maehonaland Volunteers, 1891-1895, clasps; through Matabelo war, 1893, medal: Masnonaland rebellion 1 of-1896 and 1897; raised Umtali Volunteers and acted for a time as officer,commanding lino of communication, and commanded tho Marandella's Field; Force, clasps, 1896-1897. ■.'■'■','■":' '" "Cplonelßrqwne ('Maori Browne , he, wp' known as in New Zealand) is sixty-two years of-age,.»nd was educated.at Cheltenham.College. : Hβ finds himself;penniless principally through loss of his cattle through disease in Mashonaland." ..,'.;, Mr. Allhusen; ..thought .thai something should be done in the direction of endeavouring, to obtain just recognition of Browne's, pervices. Other speakers concurred,; arid Mr. Allhusen ... _!...,..■..... . . "That the notice in the 'Daily Mail , concerning Colonel G. Hamilton Browne having come under the notice pf the Taranaki Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, they beg to jdraw the. attention of the Minister for Defence to' it, so that Steps may be taken to \ recognise .
