" POLICE CASES. (Before Messrs. H. F. Davis and W. H. " Hennah.) CRUELTY TO A HORSE. Wm. Prestigo was charged that on December 30, at Wellington, ho did cruelly illtreat a horso by working it in harness vhile , it was suffering from sore, sho'ulders. Station-Sergeant Darby informed, the Court that tho one redeeming featiuo of 'tho case was that defendant, as soon as he was spoken to by tho constable, took the horso home and had 'not worked it since. i . Defendant said that tho horse wiis suffering from heat boils, which bioke whilst go-ing-up Jlolesworth Street with a load of bricks. A conviction and fine of 10s. and'costs 7s. was imposed. ALLEGED THEFT. ' A youth named Richard George Clifford Ray was charged with having, on January 15, at Dunedin, stolen the sum of £11 19s. 6d. ,in money, tho property of C. Smith, second officer of tho steamer Koromiko. Chief Detective M'Grath informed the bench ' that ho understood accused desired to plead guilty at Wellington, and ho would therefore ask for a remand to Tuesday morning to enable the police to communicate with Dunedin, and ascertain if they had any objection to the ease being taken here. - STREET PLEASANTRIES. Patrick M'Namara, - a well-dressed young man, was charged.(l) with insobriety, and (2) with having used obscono language on the Taranaki Street Wharf. Accused pleaded guilty to both charges. Station - Sergeant , Darby stated that M'Namara was under the influenco of liquor, and was engaged helping to rope ,up a boat when two officials spoke to him, and ho used the languago complained of. On the first chargo a fino of 6s. was- imposed, and on tho second a conviction and iine of £3 and dosts 10s., in default one month's imprisonment, was entered. -. ALLEGED FALSE PRETENCES, ' John William Campbell, a young man, was charged that on January 12, at Wellington, he did obtain of. and from-the Wellington Fresh Food and Ico Co. bno box of butter valued at £2-80. by means of a certain falso pretence..with intent-to defraud, .* < • , On the application, of Chief Detective MGrath a .remand till morning was granted. Bail was allowed in the sum of £10 and one surety of £10. Mr. Dis appeared for accused. ' THREATENING BEHAVIOUR. Herbert James Allen and Thomas Rutherford pleaded guilty to a,chargo of having, en January 2, used, threatening behaviour m John Street, whereby a breach of tho "peacewas occasioned, Allen was convicted and fined 20s.'and costs 10s., and Rutherford, , who,was, defended by Mr. Wilford, was convicted and fined ss. and costs 10s. OTHER CASES. ■■ r ■ A young man named Harold Walker appeared on remand on a chargo of failing to provide for tho maintenance of an illegitimate child. A further remand to Wednesday next was granted, bail being allowed in tho sum , of £50 and two sureties of £25 each. Mr. •Wilford appeared'for complainant. .John Finn appeared on remand-on a charge of having been found in" a stato of helpless drunkenness in Lambton Quay-on January 11. Defendant was convicted and nned 17s. 6d., the nmount of expenses incurred, in default 48 hours' imprisonment. One'-first offender was fined 10s., and another was convicted and discharged. • > ' BY-LAW CASES. ) ■ James M'Quade was fined 10s. and costs 7s. for allowing an express to remain standing in- Donald M'Lean Street for a longer time than reasonably necessary for loadin" or unloading. ~ , > ° Alfred Evans was fined ss. and costs 14s. for leaving an express in Thorndon Quay without some competent person being in charge thereof, and without locking tho wheel, . " WANDERING STOCK AT KARORI. 1 Alice Wickman pleaded guilty to a charge Of allowing cattle to wander a"t Karori. It was stated by tho council's representative that defendant's cows were continually wandering about the streets and breaking fences, .and damaging gardens: etc. The council was compelled to ask for a substantial penalty. A fine of 10s. and costs 7s was entered. -'■ John ,M'£abe was fined ss. and costs 7s. for being the owner of a horse found wandering at Karon.
