HINTS FROM THE MAGAZINES.
TO WASH A PLUME. I Mako a suds of Ivory - soap and " cold water, and let it stand for tivo 'or three hours. Then put it into hot water; let it remain about twenty minutes. Lay'it on a clean cloth, and removo* any dirt which may remain with a piece : of soft cloth' or silk dipped in soap suds; rinso in five changes of hot water; lay it on a towel; touch it lightly with a piece of cloth rolled'up, to restoro the curl. When almost dry, shako until fluffy; place in tissue-paper and place in the warming ■ oven ■of the stove to dry thoroughly. 'i'o cuijl.it, if necessary use an ivory paper-cutter—the dull side of the blade. . ■ ■ A LIBRARY HINT. I hare transformed a number of boobs, whose bindings were perfectly good, but badly faded and rubbed, by pasting, blue, or grey, Michelet charcoal paper over the cloth or, leather, using heavy white paper for the labels,, with lettering in library, writing. Michelet paper, is used . by., some of' the best binders. It is very .tough and .strong, and comes in a number of shades of blue (one quite dark), greys, and, sage green. It is- sold at all the large artists'-. material shops, and costs twopence for a sheet eighteen inches by twenty-four. In applying it, the entire piece must bo covered smoothly with paste, so as to shrink it evenly, and it I must be rubbed smooth immediately. Picture mats; can be made in the same way, .on a cardboard foundation. For such purposes, I buy at a paint-store paperhanger's -paste, getting nearly a quart for twopence: halfpenny. It is perfectly smooth and very thick.. To insure its- keeping more than , a day or two. 1 work into cach quart a tpaspoonful of . oil of , lavender,' pack it. in preserve-jars, ■. screw the tops on, and set it away in a cool'place. It keeps indefinitely; • WASHING TROUSERS. Washing boys' or men's trousers seems a difficult task, especially if they are nice ones and one wants them to have the.appehrance of new after, washing. / The results. of this method are satisfactory. . .First, .wash thoroughly in warm (not.hot) soap. suds, rubbing as little as possible, but pressing, between the hands, Avoid rubbing soap on any part,, except the worse spots, and do that, before they are put into the water; rinse' carefully twice in cool water, not wringing them, : but. allowing them to drip. After the last rinsing turn, them I wrong side out and hang them-out-of-doors in shady place. Pin theim *to the line by the waist-band, .using pins enough so that. they will" hang naturally, riot sagging anywhere. Watch- closely, arid as fast as the .water collects in the hems press it ont with a cloth between both hands. : Before, they are "quite .dry; press carefully with a hot. iron on ; the--'wrong- side, afterward turning them and creasing down ; the front of'each; leg. If the directions' are, followed they will look' like, new, and'no appreciable shrinkage will 'be seen. \ : BEAUTY AND COMMON SENSE. Even now there are very few women who understand the full meaning and : significance of . what, is known, as beauty-culture. Few seem, able to understand that beauty of 'complexion is like everything else connected with physique: it must be- tended and cared for. It is, jn fact, as necessary to. take care of your -skin', as 'to take care'of your teeth; and the .care of the skin is a much-more delicate matter • than the - care of. the < teeth': Made : moiselle .Helena Rubinstein .has .:won fame arid fortune on her merits, because she has given: her life, to- an: exhaustive' study of \ beatityrculture . or,• honestly.- scientific lines.
