FIELD AND STREAM.
|' (Bv Dry Fi,t.) . . Trout .fishers, like all other specialists, are hard to'please at any tiine—perfection, as far as tho fishing conditions are concerned, being, an.unheardrof thing.. For tho last few. weeks the lowness of tho streams, too -much weed, fish not on the feed, and sundry other .excuses have been. used, as reasons for light bags,.and sometimes: empty .ones.'. To a very 'large, extept these statements, are. true, < for locally the fishing conditions, are .unusually i.had,, and. it is, only those . anglers with an onormous amount oE perseverance and I patience that are venturing out. Reports from outside districts. announce good sport, but visits to some of the resorts have only proved fruitless n»d costly,..without the expected five-pounders attached. _ Rain -'-is - needed badly, and, until it comes in sufficient quantities,. our local fishing -is practically filiished. ■ .: , -■
' "It is many years since some of our local streams received so' many regular visits from tangent," writes a correspondent' signing himself "Pleased." "This season I have fished Sonth Karori seven times, and Makara twice, and on each occasion havd been bailed up by- Ranger. Coate. It is as well to mention that I have fished in this distriot\for a number of years, and have'only been called on to show my. license twice prior to this I season." ' ' I Our. Toka&nu correspondent reports . that fishing : there is equal to that of last season, and some fine specimens of trout, have been landed. The largest brown trout taken this season was-221b., Mr. W. A. Prouse, of AVanganui, being the successful angler. The laTgesfc vainhow -weighed 1751b., and was caught by Mr. Webster, a tourist from | England. Both were 'excellent specimens, and in fine condition. ■ '
Rainbows up to 121b. and 141b. aro plentiful, and brown trout up to 201b._ in weight have frequently been caught this season. The test, time for Tokaann fishing'is yet to como as from, tho end of January to the close of the season is always considered to eclipse tho early part. Up to the present time most of the iish taken have been in good order, and provided excellent sport. *'■'.■ 1 Mr. Powell landed eleven trout on.fly!from thoHutt River last Sunday evening. They were in good order and of fair average size. Mr. E. Wiffen had a good day at'Wainui last Sunday, securing fourteen on fly, running up to ljlb. in' weight. . ..
