Bookmakers wishing to bet at the Jliraltiar pony races on Saturday must apply for licenses by 3 p.m. to-day, at the club's omee, Bank Chambers, Lambton Quay. H. Hickey has secured My Darling for OU guineas, and the Merriwce mare will be started at the Wairoa meeting next week : ana afterwards at .the Gisborne meeting. In conversation with "Geraint," of the Manawatu Standard," Mr. F. Attfield owner of Master Douglas, stated that ho thought that the horse's fall 1 at EUerslie [vas due to the crowd of spectators near the last hurdle. Tho horse's attention was evidently attracted,. and in consequence he took off badly. "" At the Foxton meeting noxt week the oxpenment, of the horses carrying their numbers affixed to their bridles, will be tried ; as it is reckoned that this will make the. judge's task a much easier one in the case of a close finish. . . . : .... . . Mr. J..8. Harcourt, president of thoWolrmgton ilacing; Club, who returned on 'Wednesday from a- holiday trip to . England, brought with him ,a handsome and valuable silver cup, which he lias.presented to his club, to be allotted as a prize at some future race meeting. As to'what particular race the cup will be allotted, will later on be decided at a meeting of stewards. A trophy of the kind is always valued by owners, and any race to. which it is attached should attract large entries and cause widespread interest. The Wellington Cup is, one of the few principal races at the Wellington meeting's that has not so far been won ,by a' horse owned by Sir Geo. Clifford. Previous to the advent of Husbandman, : the colours of the Squire of, Stonyhtirst had-not been'carried to victory in either the C.J.G.-Derby or the Great Northern Derby. The Treadmill colt not only won those events, but also added the St. Andrew's Handicap at Feilding to the- list of important races won by Sir Geo. Clifford. Great interest centres in Husbandman's chances,, in ' the' Wellington Cup, but those who vote the race a good thing for him should recollect that he has a big task before him in conceding weight and age to a large number l of candidates, such as Ikon, Bourrasquo, Moloch, Iranui, Muskerry, Swimming Belt, and Blue Ribbon. Besides, at the conclusion of the RiccartaV Meeting, many averred that; had Artillerie been iu the Derby she would have won. Supposing that they have now changed, thoir opinion on this point, it must be allowed that Artillerie has probably made some improvement just the same as Husbandman, and the, latter concedes her weight. Of those candidates lower down the list, than Artillerie, quite a number have shown .winning form recently. -.-; ; "
