UNIVERSITY SENATE. -Auckland,; January 12. i The annual-meeting of the Senate of -the University-of-New'Zealand will be opened at the Auckland University College on Wednesday, January 20. The Seriate will eit in the locture-room, which was the old Provincial Council Chamber, and also the room where the New Zealand House of Representatives first met in 1854. I afl early hour this morning the Victoria Hotel, at plenore, near Milton, was totally destroyed by fire. Tho building, which, ■.was erected in 1862, was owned and occupied by Mrs. Stenhonso as publichouse, store, post office, and telephone office. Tho outbreak was discovered about 3.30, having apparently originated in the parlour. The inmates, foui 'in number, had to make a hurried exit. Verj little was saved. The building was insured - for £250 and the stock for £350, but the owner is understood to be a. heavy loser. All the mail and postal matter in the building , was destroyed, and, the Mount Stuart Roaa Board, which used portion of tho building as • i offices, lost many survey records, maps, etc.
