AN ACT OF HEROISM.
RESCUED FROM DROWNING. (Bi xexuaairn.—spkoai eoiuttsroNDWi.l Auokland,' January 12. There was a very narrow escapo from drowning in'the Wailratb River on Sundoy afternoon. Mr. W. L. Pullingor, of Hamilton, accompanied by /Messrs. W. Paul and A.' Elliott, walked down the river as far as Ferrer's Landing! Mr. Elliott and Mr. Pullingor determined to have a swim, and went up tho river about 100 yards in order to swim down with the curront. Mr. Elliott first took the water, and on landing noticed that his companion was well out in the river, but being under the impression that ho was a good swimmer attached no importance to the oiroumstanoo. Mr. Pullingor then started to swim towards the t shore against tho current. ■' His companions, realising that something was wrong, called opt to him, but received no reply. Shortly afterwards, they saw him sink. Mr. Elliott immediately went to his rescue, but he had somo 20 yards to swim before ho catno up to the drowning man, who had then sunk wjieo. Ho took the man by the arm, and after a haTd struggle succeeded jn reaching the bank of the river. Mr. Pullinger, when he reached the bank, was in a very exhausted state, and his rescuer's' condition was little better. The greatest credit is due to Mr. Elliott for .hie plucky • action. The .immediate canes of the trouble was that Mr. Pullinger was swept against a shelving reek aad injured his leg; in 'addition, he wae hampered by an injury to his log received during the South Afrioan war.
