Phillips,'aged 33, formerly .a traveller for Storer, Meek,: and Co.', committed' suicide by hanging- from a ■ rafter ) in an outhouse in' the garden- of a house' in Brook ; Street, where hisimother'was staying. Phillips had, been ten months in the Wellington Asylunr previous' td. December 14. • Ho-was advised, by. a 'doctor to come- here .for a change.' ; Ho stayed' with 'relatives in Nile Sfreet,' : ahd ; tbis morning went- to ;see his mother. He left her. to-go into the garden,,was 'subsequently missed, and -found as--stated." HIS CONDITION CRITICAL. On Saturday evening Walter-Alexander Milne, who had. rooms at 121 Pine' Street '•' shot himself with 'a revolver. At 8 o'clock' Mr. John' Craig, from, whom Milne has rented apartments for the past nine- months,' heard a shot fired, and found Milne with a six-chambered,.revolver in his hand in the next room. One, of the cartridges, had been discharged, but the revolver contained five others. A bullet had entered behind his right-ear, and found exit again through' the forehead. Mr. Craig _at once reported the occurrence to.the police, who were soon on the scene.. Dr. Elliott was summoned, and ordered'.the man's removal to the hospital. Arrived there, Milne was conscious, but the hospital authorities advised last I night that his condition is serious. Milno is' between 35 and 40 years of age, and has been married for about .four years. At present his wife is not residing with- him. Some time ago, he was;,in'business as a store-' keeper, but latterly, he has been out of employment. He has no family.' Late last night Milne's condition was unchanged.
