It has,.become: a practice with the Prime .Minister, 'Sik ■ Joseph Ward, to deal with the revenue returns before they are gazetted, a practice that would be. commendable if the figures, were given intheir entirety. But unfortunately the ■ ;Prime Minister only deals with the revenue; the details of the expenditure are not. given,' although this year we are assured that there has been "a, considerable increase" ,of expenditure, and such, an admission implies a good deal. The revenue for the nine months ended December 31, 1908, totalled £6,421,028, • showing an : increase of £113,927, as compared with the corresponding period of. the, previous year. '■■ : However, the increase, small though it is, must be regarded with ; some degree: of satisfaction. It would be interesting to know to. wtiali extent the railway revenue was influenced by the Manawatu Railway, and Main Trunk line, both of which were in operation under Departmental control for a portion orthe past quarter.
