David Carvasso, alias Carver, was brought .forward for. sentence ou the following charges—(l) that on or about December 4, at Mauriceville; lie did i obtain' the .sum of' £2 fr'bm one Alfred llebay. by means of a.: Cor -: tain false pretence, to wit, a valueless cheque, and (2) that, 'on or about .November 25, at Palmerston North, ho did obtain the sum of £2 from \V. H. Scott by means of a valueless cheque. - • :. • Mr. Meredith, who appearedfor- the defence, painted r a sorrowful, picture of the plight of his client, a young man who had hold a responsible position as a clerk, and : had fallon on hard times.; *He . had been unable to make a- living, and had been ■i; travelling about' the. country . looking .. fbr . work/ ■•• Ho had applied; for a position on.. ' various -farms, .-.but. never having' ..done any ■ of. this- class of work he could not get employment, as■? men - of. experience were wanted. Accused's past life had been a good one, and his present position ; was one of pure ■ hardship. , .-ma : peoplo were residents of.
