The'conference, he said, was thoroughly re: presentative, of .the ; craft;in. New; only two,or three minor'unions not belonging to'the federation.'He trusted .that the association,' which had been most successful during 'its four years ; ofi existence, had many years of usefulness : before it. He stated.- that there was a growing opinion among members j that" hand'compositors should not be-called upon to work' more.than 44' hours per week. I A.remit from -the executive to the efieot that it was desirable that a'monthly, trade journal should be established and circulated among members of affiliated unions,iwas the subject of ..the. first business dealt with; A motion w.as carried endorsing; the suggestion, and the,executive'a scheme was adopted with minor amendments. Matters of finance'and management were considered, and formulated, and'the.;; whole /draft scheme will, be sub* mitted to the unions .for their approval. ':■, A: return presented showed that '445,1571b. of; printed matter';was imported into./ the Dominion- within ten months of the Jast'ad- : iustinent of the Customs tariff, the'' whole ! being; valued at' £14,655, and paying duty .to ! the extent "of £5,615. : ' The ' question :of printed-circulars, etc., being introduced'into the' Dominion without duty being paid on such was also discussed,.and a resolution was passed, to. the .effect, that: employers :and employees ; should bestir themselves and endeavour to. show that■'thorp' was no necessity',to. get printing done biitsido Now Zealand. : .. . .
