Auckland, January 3.A fire oocurretl on Saturday night on board tho Northern Company's steamer Waimario while lying at tho wharf. Tho .fire is supposed to have started in the galley, and, with great rapidity, spread to the pantry and fsaloon, all the fittings of which- wero destroyed. ' January 3. - \ A telephone mJMagirirqm Wairoa states that a "block' of buildings there was totally destroyed by lire between two and half-past two o'clock this morning. .The buildings destroyed were chose ocoupied by the kast Coast Mail" newspaper, damage about £800; Chapman, draper,-damage about £800; Broad arid Tristram, chemists, damage, not sta-ted; Holt, builder, damage-about £1000. 'Nothing was saved. The total damage k estimated at about £7000. There-was a change of wind at about three o'clock; otherwise the destruction would have been much greater. About 6 o'clock on Saturday night a fire occurred in Messrs. Wylio and Co.'s promises, occupied by Mr. J. J. Patterson, solioitor; R. J. Paterson and Co., land and estate agents, and accountants; and Wyhe and Co.. grocers. Tho fire apparently "started in the. office of J. J. Patterson, from some unknown cause, and obtained a, firm hold in that position in the building, and, then-spread to the upper story. , Tne brigade was quickly on tho scene, and subdued the flames, although a gale was blowing at the time, and serious damage was-an-ticipated. R. J. Paterson and Co.'s premises suffered considerable - damage from water, and Wylie and Co. lose: about £20 also through water. -The promises are'in the estate of J. .J; Patterson, bankrupt, and ■the business of Wylio and Co. belongs .to the estate. Willitims, hairdrefiser and;tobacconist,; Masterton, which are situated in an old block of- wooden buildings' in Queen Street,, running from Perry Street to the police station. , Tho smart work of the brigade" confined the.-outbreak to its place of origin, arid all'danger 'of spreading through the blookj whioh is themost dangerous in town from a firo point of view, was quickly dispelled. Mr. Williams's shop was gutted ( and all tho stock and saloon fittings more or, less destroyed by fire and water. The'building; which is owned by'Mr, T, G. Mason, is insured for £300,.and the stock and fittings aro, covered by policies totalling £500. The loss to Mr.' AVilliams is estimated at about £300 over and above the insurances. only theory advanced as to tha cause of the outbroak is that rats caused the ignition of matches, a stack of. which is kept near the counter in the front shop, where the fire originated. Whilo engaged on.the fire, one of the members of the Fire Police Corps | Lieut. L. Attwood, received a nasty gash across, his ankle through striking a sharp piece of broken window glass. An artery was severed, and the wound bled severely, until stopped by Constable Fielding, another member of the corps, who lias a practical knowledge of ambulancfe work. ". -■ 'SMALL OUTBREAK AT NEWTOWN., . ; Tho Firo Brigade was called out shortly before 9 a.m. yesterday, to attend a fire at 23 Waripori Street, a wooden building, occupied by Mr. James Scott, and owned by Mr. Isaac, of Adelaide Roqd, Two rooms of the dwelling were seriously injured by tho fire before: it was, 'extinguished, and the rest of the' house was damaged by tho heat, and smoke,' The contents were uninsured. ,'.;
