January. l. ; ] - The Wairarapa Caledonian Society's thirty- 1 third a'nnual sports gathering took plare on . tho Show Grounds to-day, and passed off ; very- successfully. Tho • attendance was 'voll up to the average, and ' included visitors 1 from all parts of the district. The amounts taken at the gates and grandstand- were £141 14s. 6d. and £29 10s. -respectively. All the events were got off without a hitch and 'well to time. ' At times three .events were being decided simultaneously, so that the crowd , were kept interested.'n the .proceedings in the arena all day; AIJ the principal events, especially the flat races, were well filled, and,-in many instances, contests had to ba broken up' into heats. On-the flat, E. W. .Tooby, F. E.. Goody, and W. C. Woodger were the principal winners. land dancing and bagpip? • music w-ere the features of the day's programme. J. M iiecnuit, of Dunedin, gained the highest aggregate points prize for dancing, and I'. Fmiayeon and C. C. the corresponding day, and the receipts, £295, show, a slight falling, off. Excellent' sport was the amateur events' being specially good. The cycling was somewhat disappointing owing to a large number of intending starters deciding at the last moment to go to the Oamaru gathering.
