Afterthought,- and Benguard were.-the, soratchings:in, the -Maiden Hack Race, leaving nine starters... A,large airiount of publio support was devoted to Te Ru.and also .to; Rock Ferry, but the other horses were all: practically , outsiders. Te Ru appeared to be a bit sore, arid, although he got well away, he could not finish with Rock Ferry Christmas, both *of whom , are improving every race.! Humpty Dumpty, ran well for, a horse which has been in training only; three months. Waiwerewere, Pui kowai. and, Vinco each lost several lengths at the start, and were novor in tho race.
. Aboriginal and Lochiela were both withdrawn from the Tuhitarata Handicap for future engagements. Tho race was a gift to Tumnt. He hopped off first and -was nOTer headed and never troubled. The form shown by Maioja and Simplex was disappointing, while Ira-nui should, also , have Tun- a better race. Tupono found tbo weight too much for her, There is no doubt that Tumut is in great form. .' . . A field : of sis contested the Rimutaka Hack Handicap,-the defections being Strathcona and Knight Commander. - This was a good betting race, but most' support -was accorded to Osiris, Tangoroa, and Lucretius. Lucretius looked fitter than any other horse in the race., but she tired at the end of a mile. Osiris ran a good' race. He ■ was in a good position-all the way, and won easily. Tangeroa" was last"'nearly_ all |ihe way and,, had he made his run earlier, lie might have troubled Osiris. He finished, however, much distressed. Diplomatic, who was 'capably ridden by F. Ayres, was well with Osiris at the end of a mile. . Lerida, found 'the distance too far for, her in such company. No Trumps' appeared to bo short of several gallops; before she' can be espected to strike form. The starting in this race was'good. ; With Theodore out of the Nursery Handicap, that race was considered a . hot thing for the Kilcheran -filly Kiltie ; Lass. She might have won hjid she not run very ,wide at the bend into the straight, but Aema had somethings in • reserve. Mr. Whitney's filly was in'good .condition, and finished undistressed. Kiltie Lass has probably not got over the cold which' she caught at Awapuni the other day. Gold Top was too fat' to race. ' . ' The scratchings of Aboriginal and Tangeroa reduced the field for. the Cup ,to.,nine. It was a good betting race, but by far the greatest support was accorded to Waipalm. Tho favourite ran a bad race, and totally discounted the :• Asbhurst form. Moloch, whose chances wore also fancied, was in,trouble all'the'way. ' It is.evident that there are few jockeys who properly understand the peculiar idiosyncrasies" of the son of Mauser. . Merrie Rose, ran the same race as she'did'at Carterton and later at Woodville, and were she ridden differently ,'sh'e should have, a hotter chance of winning.' White Lie was ridden 'a beautiful race by Ayre, He was in a good' position: almost the whole time, and ; won with a little in. hand., . Sunbonnet was chopped about,, and had a bad passage, otherwise she might, have been plaoed. . Sandstream also baa a bad time, and he had'ill luck, in- not being, closer up at the finish. Silken Rein, who showed an excellent preparation, ran: a .'sterling .rase, but. she seems to be hardly . class enough, for the: better of- those who were against her.; '• Thera, Splash, Glen, Te;Ru, Christ-; mas,, and' St. . Charles were' withdrawii: from tho Pukio Hack Handicap The race; which was- run a fifth of a second faster than that won by Tumut earlier in the' day; ; demonstrated, Merrivonia's' claims as" a. Sprinter. Sho .could probably, got'.over the dis-' tance- in less time, had . sho been pushed. Loohiela' waa unfortunate in meeting a fiUy like: Merrivonia,. and' l , liar connections were badly hit by the defeat. ..Blue Bell was badly left at the post, .while - Swallow ran', very well for.- five 1 furlongs. Conquer' -has evidently struck form, :and should' race bettor every day. Warlock was prominent for half a mile. Purakau was hardly good enough for the class. ; •' : -The Hon. James; Carroll's; WhaTeknra, which looked as good as anything in the race, put up a fine' reoord in the Reynolds Welter, Handicap, ruining the,, distance in the veryfast time oMmiii., 28sec.: There was no other horse ; in the face but Wharekura,. and he won from end to end. Mataari, who! was secshowed an improvement upon his Mar-: tinborough form. ' The pace was altogether too fast for the top-weights, Wailotlio and Aberration, and also for Skyo, who'is hardly built, on.strong enough lines for . a '.weight--carrie! - . - ■ I Osiris was the only'scratching in the Mokai Hack Welter,, leaving another field of nine.
