MARLBOROUGH REGATTA.
(ntOM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.) S PICton t -January 1. • ' Picton is crowded for tho regatta. The excursion trains from Blenheim brought down hundreds .during the morning, and the : Maori, from Wellington, landed about : a thousand:trippers..The weather.is fine and sanny, witli a cooling nor'-west breeze, which _ is more welcome to the picnickers than to tha oarsmen. The water, for rowing is not quite , . 'all it should, be, though the, only, race really.'; affccted by the/'jobble" was the big event,. :.'■■■■ . the Senior Fours'." interest was lent to this race on account of the appearance of. .the i Blenheim crew, the champion four of the I Dominion, and' it} defeat: by Picton, a light, • i lively crow, rowing in a new boat, and admirably suited to tho water, camo as a shock to the' Blenheim contingent. The other star- ■ ters,. Blenheim No. 2 and. Star,: finished together somo distance behind tlie placed boats.' • : A special word ; is due to the- management for the- rigour with which the regulations of the Harbours Amendment Act 227. 1908. , with' regard to keeping the course clear of 'strange., boats 'arid launches,. was_- enforced. - In. consequence, that , bane of rowing men— the irresponsible launch man who persists in running up'and down the course and-i'.'wash-ing" air the racing criift—was conspicuous -by his absence, and. each. boat , had a. ,fair, field.-' The results of. the rowing events'up to the time of the excursion, boat leaving are . as follow:— < ' - MAIDEN FOURS.
