' • Says the -"Weekly Press"i—'Akaroa regatta, which had been postponed'from December 16 on account: of. bad weathor, was successfully/carried out on ' Boxing Day, but thero was not nearly the usual attendance of . thoptiblio.' ■■ This - is, accounted ' for from the fact . that the Union Steam Ship : Company . did not run an excursion boat round, and: a number of tho Peninsula peoplo went to Littic River, whore .thoir annual sports'-were bemg hold. Tho weather and water were perfect .for . racing, and everything went on ' i well.: In the three-Benior:.events, Fouri, Pairs, and Double Sculls, tho only starters ' were Akarca and TJni6n.,: ; Tho former;simply romped in with 'the' Fours and : Pairs,; ana were expected to do. likewise in the; Double Sculls,- but .Union:were a : . "surprise paoket," and won veryeasily: Canterbury • were - unable to start in; the ; Senior Fours,' owing to some of the crew not being able to make the tri£ over. The junior events were taken by Union and Lyttelton, the former being first and second in the Double Sculls, and second in the Fours, * which ' Lyttelton' secured; Akaroa proved too good in youths for tho other clubs, and. won .both the Fours arid Double Sculls, but the Fours was a fine race, ■and the three placed,.boats were ; verydoso Together. 'Another.fine; race was. the Maiden Fours, Union, Canterbury, and Avon fighting out' 'a ; great finish; and. although, they finished, in: that; order, about a boat's length would have covered the three. Akaroa . won the last race of. the' day—Maiden* Double Sculls—after a good race. Union, Alraroa) and Lyttelton' secured the wholo of tho events between ■ them, Canterbury, ' Avon, arid Christchurch Amateurs failing to win a race. The : prize-money , was distributed as followsAkaroa (o firsts)£47, /Union (8; firsts, 5 seconds) £89, Lyttelton (1 first, 2 seconds) £15, Canterbury .£2, - . The-, points for the D.C.L.. Challorige Shield for . Regattas' are Union 19, Akaroa : 15, Lyttelton 9/Canterbury 6, Avon and Amateurs 1 each. : 3 Tho/first, regatta of- the season in whibh local clubs are directly interested took place at Picton yesterday,.too late for any comment in this column. Full notes, however, will be forthcoming next week. The Star Club had brews entered for every event, but an alteration in .the maiden crew had to be made at the eleventh hour, owing to the'removal of the bow, Aborcrombie, from Wellington to. Nelson. His place was filled by S. G.C'owles, with what result is now. known, provided 'the regatta: comes off according to schedule.' Cowles is a good oar, though Tight, and the chango would not have made a: material difference,. but for the fact that the. crow as now constituted will not have had a row together before-arriving on thei coui'sej This is bad luck, as .the men iave trained hard and conscientiously',;, arid. I. lookedi. to them-' to make a big race. . The senior'crew , of this club' has. also, had its, sharo'of'.misfortuno. During the-Christmas week, L. A.' Marchanti the No., 2,; .strained his shoulder' badly, ant at. .'one; time it looked as though the crow would not get to tho post. However, the injured member has made such progress that, at time of writing, it has been decided to start the original combination. The Wellington; Club 1b not so fully represented, but its junior crow is a. good one, and, when this appears, it should be found to have given tho Star men a big run for it. ,- Es-champion Bill Beach, now senior ranger atitho National' Park,' Sydney rwas admitted to the' Sydney Hospital on December 14, whpre";ho underwent a successful operation for appendicitis. The Nugget Polish Company has already deposited' with " the. " Sportsman " the. £500 i it. proiriised to givo m prizes; for a sculling , race on tho Thame?, and this will bo arranged , to come off in May or June next, which will i- allow.amplo'.time, for colonial intending com- , petitors to train i:or the event. The same . company has also' fjlven £100 as a prize to be ; rowed fbr earlier in the new year by British i scullers only in a " best-boat" handicap. I Things aro looking up a little for professional scullers in England. .. , : Eaßtor Monday is mentioned as the probable dato of the Whelch-Fogwell match. It is to be rowed at Akaroa for £100 a-side. . ! The Sydney. "Referee" has boen authorised ' by Arnst and Fogwell to issue a challenge i to any other' pair in the world. ~ i I understand that it is not a fact that i "Dick" Arnst. has been approached 1 by Mr. r Geo. Goldio with the object of trainjng the , cyclist-sculler for the tennis championship, i It is also not a fact that Arnst will be r seleoted to. make tho next expedition to the South Pole single-handed; * Further, he will
not deliver the next presidential address at the British Association, nor Has he any intention of ousting Sir Joseph Ward from the Awarua Beat. In short, as far as is known, ho intends to remain plain "Dick Arnst"— for. somo time at least. ■ _ ' I have to acknowledge receipt from^ Mr. P. S. Foley, lion, secretary, of an official, programme .of tho Hawke's. Bay Regatta on February 20. The events and prize money are as under:— Maidoa Fours, one mile, entrance fee lis., first priz# . £9, second prize £2." Maiden Sculls, one mile, entrance fee 45., first prize £3, second prize £1.
