Sir Joseph Ward will bo travelling from Invercargill to Temuka to-day. The Hon. R. M'Nab is at Invercargill, the Hon. J. A. Millar ill Dunedin, the Hon. J. Carroll in the Gisbomo district, the Hon. J. M'Gowan at the Thames, and the Hon. G. Foivlds in Auckland. The Hon. W. Hall-Jones and the Hon; Dr. Findlay remain in Wellington.

Tho Rev. W- Gray Dixon, M.A., of Auckland, will occupy. St. John's pulpit next Sunday.

Four young Wellingtonians were to leave England yesterday by tho Omrah on their way to New Zealand, Messrs. J. Stout, Gurdon Samuel, Robert Watson, and James Lang.

■ Mrs. T. S. Weston, wife of ex-Judge Weston, died yesterday morning (states a New Plymouth l'ross Association telegram). Mr. T. Shailer Woston, solicitor, of Wellington, is one of tho sons of the deceased lady. Tho other sons aro Messrs. George and Clause (also solicitors, one practising in Christchurch, the other in New Plymouth) and Walter (manacer of the Taranaki "Herald").

Leave of absence has been granted to the following teachers by tho Wellington Education Board: —Miss M. A. Broadbent, Carterton (one month); Miss E. A-, Scott, Levin (eleven weeks, from October 5); Miss Wilson, Makuri (one month); Miss M'Lauchlan, Rongomai; Miss F. Cooke, Terrace (oxtended leave, two weeks, from November 1); Miss E. Pickering, Petono (November 1-20); Miss Robinson, Clyde Quay (extended leave, one month); Mr. J. Bingaus, Obariu (six weeks) j Mr. H. Monaghan, Kaiori (one month, from October 21). A number of applications for leavo to attend examinations were also granted.

Dr. Bell, Director of the Geological Survey, leaves by the Pateena to-day for Nelson.

The appointment of Mr. Thomas Patrick Burko as inspector under the Orchard and Garden Diseases Act is announced.

Mr. R. W. Holmes,' Engineer-in-Chief of the Public Works Department, will leave next Tuesday to inspect the Main Trunk railway prior to the opening ceremony.

The appointment of Mr. C. C. Graham (lately stipendiary magistrate at Dunedin) aa chairman of the Licensing Committees of tho Wanganui aind Manawatu districts has been gazetted.

The resignations of the following teachers have been accepted by the Education Board: Miss C. E. Orr, Mangapakeha; Miss L. Ainsworth, Saunders's Roadj and Mrs. Wakelin, cookery instructress. •

Mr. and Mrs. J. Gilbert, of Newcastle, N.S.W., who have been oil a sevon months' tour of the world, have been spending a few days in Wellington. They will leave for Newcastle, via Sydney, to-day.

In consequence of the increasing importance of the railway works in Westland. particularly in connection with the Arthur's Pass tunnel, it has beon docided to separate the positions of Government Resident Engineer and engineer to the Greymouth Harbour Board, neld by Mr. John Thomson. Mr. Thomson will act as Harbour Board engineer, and Mr. J. H. Lewis, resident engineer at Broken River, will take over tlio duties of resident engineer at Groymoutli. Mr. Hugh Vickerman, of: the North Island Main Trunk railway, will succeed Mr. Lewis at Broken River, leaving for that position as soon as the Main Trunk line is open for traffic.
