RIFLE SHOOTING.

; MATCHES AT TRENTHAM. A TRICKY SOUTHERLY. Saturday morninffwas dull and squally, ; arid, for some time there was considerable doubt as to whether the weekly sljdbting matches at Trentham would eventuate that afternoon.' But the weather oleared in time, and; despite the very strong counter attraction in tlife adjoining field—the Wellington Racing Club's Spring Meeting—34l, all told, mustered on the range. The lrind was rather tricky: it blew uncertainly from the .south, and fishtailed- and corkscrewed down the dips and gullies of the Trentliam Hills. The range flags failed to aj*ree; one blew hard to the north, its partner opposite fluttered and flapped in tho opposite direotion, while the others mostly boxed the compass and , ruined roputations. The shooting was of a fair , quality, there being a somewhat long tail. There generallyiis a tail, but it seems to thrivo best on fish-tails and corksorews. When these are plentiful, the tail has been known to attain abnormal proportions. The best range score was 32, compiled on the 500 yards mound, by Pte. Neal, of the Guards. At GOO yards, Pte. Eves (Highland Rifles), Q.-Jl.-Sergt. Piercev (Engineers), Rifleman G. Halliday (Karori Club), and Pte. Smart (Guards), totalled un 31 each. At the shorter range 31's were made by Pte. Churches (Post and Telegraph Rifles), Corp. Dobson (Highland Rifles), Sergt. Mitchell (Engineers), Rifleman W. Aston (Karori Club), and Pte* Hunt (Zealandia Rifles). The best agereeates off the rifle, among- the seven-shot matches, were those of Rifleman Halliday (Karori R.C.), 20-31-60 i Pte. Nieass (City Rifles), 30-30-60, and Pte. Hunt, 31—29—G0. THE PARADE STATE. The parade state-was as follows:—Engineers, 28; Elcctrio Light Section G.A.V., 7; Heretaunga Mounted Rifle's, 15; City Rifles, 33; Guards, 32; Kelbourno Rifles, 17;. Civil Service Rifles, 27; Post and Telegraph Rifles, 56; College Rifles, .18; Zealandia Rifles, 20; Highland Rifles, 30; Hutt Valley Rifle 6,' 26; Karori Rifle Club, 30; Staff, 2; total, 341, Captain Cowles acted as range-officer, and Staff-Sorgt.-Major Rose supervised in tho trenches. The rangedetail was supplied "by tho Kelburne Rifles. Following are results of the various matches. It will be noted that only-the first- six are tabulated, the aggregates 1 only of.'the remainder being shown. In B Class results,'the first three names are. tabulated. ' The adoption of this method of- setting out' the;: shooting rosults has been' rendered'necessary by, the Btesdily-increasing'pressure on our . reading space. In -future; if a "sh'ootist" seeks to parade his : prowess in tho publio eye. nnd -show what he can-do at-erich range,-he-will-have to fire into the leading six. Should anv commendable scores • be, made, "off. the rifle" these will be specially mentioned in. the 'introduction, as frequently a.'first-olass marksman>is so,heavily handicapped that'- ho appears l well down the list.
