India has 30,206 miles of railways open and 2516 miles of lines under construction and sanctioned. _ These figures represent tha position of Indian railways at the end of March, 1908, and arc. given in a consular report for the yoar 1907 transmitted through Washington. According to Consul-General W. H. Michael, of Calcutta, there were 924 miloi of new road opened to tho public durina 1907, making a total of 30,010 miles of raiU ways in India at tho beginning of JatiuarT 1908. During tho year 290 miles of roaj woro sanctioned. Tho total capital outlat on all lines at the close of 1907 aroount&i to £265,621,000, while the expenditure mnctioned for the year 1908-9 reaches a si:m of £10,000,000. During 1907 tho gross earn, ings of all lines totalled up to £31,512 466 or £2,100,932 more than m the previous year. The net earnings amounted to £15. 321,866, which represents an increase -«Y £581,866 over .1906.
