THE "NO-LICENSE" CAUSE.
Sir,—Oil account of my'absence fiiom'Wellington J: have only just seeiv your' issue'of October 14, with " True Tempcrnnco'sreply' to my ; letter. " True TemperA-ndj,'" in his former letter,. asked,' " Does. reduce dninkenness ?" I . showed frcim ; official returns that "" No-License " has reduced! drunkenness wherevor it has boen' tridd. And now "Truo Temperance" • burks tho (Question ho himself raised. By ' the testimony of' official records, and by tho testipionji of reliable and prominont mon in ovors "NoLiconso" town, " No-License " has decreased drunkenness in a quite remarkablo degree. The man who denies" stultifies himself. Tho fact cannot be gainsaid. . . "Truo Temperance" talks about drinking in .the homes of tho people. Over against his supposition lot the testimony, of'the Vicar of Ashburton be given. He said,' spwaking at a meeting under the presidency of Bishop Julius, " Now, I am speaking of what, has como under my personal knowledge, and what I havo taken tho trouble to verify. I defy anyone to show mo .a home in Ashburton where liquor enters torday wherp .it did ,)iot enter in license days. I can poilit to many, homes into which it .does not gos. but . whero it went previous to.;' No-license,'-.■• . To quoto the late Rev. Hugh Price Hughes ■as "Truo Temperance"' does as though ho were opposed to "No-License" is as monstrously unfair as - ; tho action of . the liquor party in regard to General 800 th... Hugh Prico Hughes frequently wrote atid spoke in favour of local'option; and after a .visit ho paid to tho Stato of Maine in.' 1891 thus wrote Everybody seemed. to be healthy, prosperous, and cheerful. As., wo went through tho city we felt it was a hundred years in advance of anything we havo in England."—l am, etc., '' ARTHUR DEWDNEY. Nelson, October IC.
