M'Nab goes to Hastings by to-day's express, and the other Ministers of the Crown are in Wellington. Dr. Freugley, District Health Officer, returned. last night from Palmerston North. Mr. Harold Beauchamp returned to Wellington last evening from a visit to Queensland and New South Wales. Dean Smith, of Hastings, is at present performing the annual collection for the Roman Catholic Cathedral in the Te Aro parish. Mr. W. A. Parkinson, proprietor of the Hawera " Star," intends leaving on a holiday visit to the Old Country in January or Fobruary. Mrs. Maria M. Pilcber, relict of. the late Mr.-H. J. Mr. C. C. Graham, of Dunedin, who was in active service as stipendiary magistrate until recently, arrived by tho Mararoa from south yesterday morning. Mr. Graham is to relieve in tho magisterial work of Wanganui for a couplo of months. Our Dunedin correspondent states that Captain P. Reade, who was highly complimented on tho skill and judgment he displayed in handling tho Hawea when she broke down, has resigned from the Union Company after cloven years' excellent service, and leaves immediately for the Old Country. Mr. W. B. Fisher, hon. treasurer of the St. Jolm Ambulance Association, and Mrs. Fisher returned to town from the south by the Mararoa yesterday morning. While in Dunedin they dined with the Primate of New Zealand and Mrs. Nevill, and 011 Sunday morning last Mr. Fisher conducted Divine service in the Church of the Holy Innocents, at the request of his Lordship, who is a subprelate of tho Order of St. John of Jerusalem. News reached Sydney last week from the Islands that "Jack'; Loudon, the wellknown author, who is making a cruise through the Pacific in his yacht Snark, left the Solomon Group on a visit to Ontong, Java, in the Lord Howe Group. After spending a week or two at these he purposes leaving his yacht in tho Solomon Group and making a trip, by one .of Messrs. Burns, Philp and Company's steamers to Sydney. V Mr. Falk Cohen's re-appointment as treasurer to the Wellington Firo Police at the annual meeting of tho corps held last evening was the signal for hearty applause. In thanking his comrades for the honour done him, Mr. Cohen said ho had been connected more or less with fire brigades for forty-two years. David Russell, of Capetown, South Africa, who arrived at Auckland from Sydney on Sunday, is just completing a two-years' tour of the world as a special miasioner in Y.M.C.A. work. He is ouo of the best-known preachers in South Africa, and has had very successful mission seasons in Sydnoy and Melbourne, and prior to that, in America and England. He will _ visit Rotorua, returning to conduct a series of mission meetings in Auckland from Octobor 25 to 29. At tho annual meeting of the Wellington Fire Police held last oveniitg, his Worship the Mayor (Hon. T. W. Hislop), 011 behalf of • the corps, made a presentation to Mr. J. Dawson, who has retired alter being secretary for eight years. ' In making the presentation, which consisted of a pair ol gold links, the Mayor stated that Mr. Dawson had filled tho position with credit to himself and profit to the corps', as was cloarly indicated by tho action of liis comradcs. Mr. H. Baker was elcctcd to the vacancy.
