. Edward Johnson, an old-age;: pensioner, . aged 65 years, who lives with his brother-in i . Hogg Crescent, was taken to tho hospital 'on' Saturday morning suffering from poisoning \ through eating match heads. It is said that before breakfast ho cut off tho heads of a box of'wax matches,, which-ho mixed with his {wrridgd and ate. He then bade farewell to his sister-in-law and went out. He was subsequently found by the police sitting quito' . unconcernedly in the park, and taken to tho hospital, where 'he"was treated by Dr. A. Hoiking. The Rover Football Club mustered in full force at the Firo Brigade's Social' Hall' on Friday evening to bid farewell to Mr. Chas. R. Fairbrother, and to present him with a travolling-bag. Mr. Fairbrother joins -Messrs \V ebster Bros, at New Plymouth. He was largely instrumental in the inception of the Riile Volunteers, in which lie ranks as sergeant.

LEVIN. ' , Mr George Devine, aged '23, a .well-known and popular, young resident of Levin, died at Palmcrston on Thursday as the result of 'appendicitis. Smith spoke of the lack of Christianity in Otaki, emphasising tho fact that tho town should be considerably more advanced in that respect, especially as .Christianity had been introduced here some seventy years ago, and a church crccted nearly sixty years ago.
