LEVIN NOTES.

(FROM OUE SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.) All empty house at Ohau, the property of Mr. L. Arcus, was burnt to the ground in the early hours of Saturday morning. The building' was insured for £100. Somo slight excitement was caused at the Holiio beach 011 Sunday by a liorso and trap gotting into the quicksand, .and it was not till all of those on the beach lent a hand that the conveyance was extricated.

At a recent meeting of the Boating Club it was decidcd to raise the annual subscription, charges, etc. As members did not como forward with their subscriptions, the club decided on Friday night to abandon the new chargcs.

The tennis season opened on the local courts last Saturday, and as the courts wore in good order, many fast games were played. It is expected that the inter-district matches will commence within a month.

The school children's bazaar, in aid of the school grounds improvements, which closed on Saturday night, was an undoubted success. Although the actual figures are not to hand, -it is estimated that the takings amounted to very close on £70, which should give the Improvement Committee something substantial to commence operations 011. It is beholden to all contractors to "keep their cradles full," judging by a decision given at a recent meeting of tile Horowhenua County Council. It appears that tlic council had to decide between two tenderers, when a councillor asked that the tender of the man with the largest family be accepted, and the council decided in his favour.
