German arid British warships are searching in tho North Sea for tho missing balloons. RESCUED AT SEA IN A PITIABLE PLIGHT. (Rec. October 18, 4.20 p.m.) Berlin, October 17. Tho Plauen, one of the missing German balloons, has been rescued in tho North Sea. The occupants were in a pitiable condition. It is feared that the Hergesell, tho other balloon, has been lost.
Ail American and a Spanish balloon that started in the race both ripped and "parachuted," the aeronauts falling from great heights without injury; a third balloon (American) was lost in the North Sea, the occuSants being rescued; a fourth (German) was iscovered' in the North Sea, and was carried to Leith; two other German balloons are reported missing. There were 23 starters. The distance covered by the winner is not stated. Last year the winner of this race, Herr Erbsloh (Germany), covered 873 miles from the starting place (St. / Louis, United States).
