LOAN INQUIRIES. (BY JELEGBAra—NiESS ASSOCIATION—COPTBIGHT.) London, October .16. Victorian threo and a-halfs have fallen ono point. The dccline is attributed to inquiries from outside tho usual channels in respect ,to the placing of a million of stock on this market.
THE INQUIRIES "UNAUTHORISED." STATEMENT BY PREMIER. Melbourne, October 17. With reference to the cablegram from London regarding Victorian three and a-halfs, Sir Thomas Bent, Victorian Premier, states that the Government has not officially mado inquiries in London regarding a new loan, and has no intention of doing so.
He understood that unauthorised inquiries had been mado by a Government official regarding the possibility of raising money, and this has .been interpreted as meaning that the Government is anxious to float a loan.
On June 24, Sir Tlios. Bent stated that "the Government was not touching the English money market, and there was no need, therefore, to talk about tho cost of borrowing money in London. . . . Tho Government did not want any money for refloating purposes for the next live, years, and even after that they did not want much, so wore 'pretty independent."
