SOUTH POLE PRESENTS.
CHRISTMAS DAINTIES FOR EXPLORERS. Tho _ first consignment of Christmas presents for tho members of Lieutenant Shackleton's Antarctic Expedition left London on Thursday (September 3), by the steamship Papnroa, which will transfer her cargo to tho Nimrod at Lyttelton, New Zealand. A glance at a list_ of tho presents suggests that another peril which must bo added to the dangers of Antarctic exploration is biliousness. A dozen game pies, several boxes of pate do foie gras, a couple of dozen large plum puddings, twelve tins of anchovy pasto, twelve large plum cakes, 1 Jib. of pepper* mints, and a pound of caramels aro only a few of tho dainties which are to create a spirit of Christmas festivity for the explorers among the dreary waste of Antarctic snows. Among other luxuries addressed to M'Murdo Sound which tho Paparoa will carry are: — 14 Mufflers. Crystallised ginger. 14 Wool helmets. Oatcakes. Socks. Mixed biscuits. Scarves. Chocolates. Jerseys. Figs. Gloves. Apricots (glaceß). Pipes. Ginger-nuts. Shortbread. Raisins. Crystallised fruits. Carlsbad plums.
