The local branch of the Huddart-Parker Companv advise that, in consequence of Wednesday next being Labour Day, the steamer Victoria, ' which, under ordinary circumstances; should leave Lyttelton on tha,t day for Wellington and Sydney, via East Coast ports, will not be able to sail -until the following day, and is therefore not due here until Friday next week. Total output, 50,028 tons; total export, 52,590 tons. Of this amount -1720 tons were shipped to foreign ports, viz., to Sydney, 1004 tons, per s.s. Komata, 2318 per. s.s. . .THE KIA ORA.. . In continuation of her discharging operations the Shnw-ijavill liner Kia'Ora leaves Wellington for Timaru this morning. THE TOMOANA. It is announced that on November 3 the Tyser liner Tomoana will leave London for Australian and New; Zoaland ports. WAIMATE, FOR LONDON. It is expected that all will be in readiness for the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Waimate to leave for London next Monday. THE OTAKI. During the next few weeks the New Zealand Shipping Company's now steamer Otaki is expected to leave Liverpool on her maiden voyage, which is to bo to New Zealand. Her tailing date from England (West Coast) is announced to be November 30,- and Auckland, which is her first New Zealand port of call, will be reached about January 19. THE INDRAVELLI. According to telegraphic advice received by Messrs. Johnston and Co., the Canadian-New Zealand liner Indravelli, from Vancouver, and ■now at Auckland, is expected to leave the Northern port for Timaru early on Saturday morning. It was generally supposed that on completing her discharge at Auckland sho would come on to Wellington. Her cargo includes large lines of general cargo for all New Zealand ports, in addition to 1,000,000 ft. of lumber for Wellington and 600,000 ft. for Auckland. PASSENGERS FOR SYDNEY. The first-class public rooms are handsome and large, and include a! lounge, library, and smoking room, situated, on the shade deck, with tho dining saloon on tho awning deck. The second-class ladies' room and smoking room, which: are vory tastefully decorated, are placed on tho shade deck, while tho dining saloon is on . the awning deck. AH. the entrances, stairways, corridors, and promenades are specially large , and airy, ,and all the public rooms and cabins throughout- aro artistically and' comfortably decorated and ■ furnished. A surgery, purser's room, barber's shop, and tho lavatories' are-rail conveniently situated, while an efficient-water service "has been- arranged,affording a plenteous supply of fresh water to all parts; in short,-no pains or expense have been spared in arranging' all details- with a view to''securing the utmost comfort for. passengers. \ The: third-class accommodation • includes a " roomy'-- dining saloon at' tho after end'.of .the rtuin deck/and largo dining spaces on the lower-deck.: with a separate galley and pantry, also a smoking room in tho after decknousej arid the -necessary lavatories. -The vessel is fitted throughout with olectric light-and bells, while largo insulated chambers are provided for the storafro and'preservation of fresh provisions, meat,' fish, arid fruit. Tho cargo is workod by 14 powerful steam winches, with the same number of derrick's,. and a special heavy dorrick of steel girder"construction arranged to lift heavy-weight up to 30 tons. The Tainui has a sea-going:speed of 13 knots, and is pr&polled by. two-sets of triple-expansion engines, constructed by Messrs. Workman, Clark'and Co.. Ltd:, steam being obtained, fi-om six large single-ended stee! cylindrical boilers, working .at'a pressure'of-2051b:, under Howdon's, s.vstom of forced draudit. The auxiliary machinery in connection with the engine anil boiler equipment.-is of the'most improved type throughout, and includes a silent ash hoist with automatic tipping bucket and internal shoot. The ballast pumping plant has a'capacity of: 200 tons per hour, and efficient'fire &itnifruisliing apparatus h'asboen fitted throughout- t.ho-".' vessel. THE CLAN LINE, Tho growing iriiportance of the ovorsoa trad* to and from Australia has induced Messrs. Gayzer, Irvine and Co., Ltd., of Glasgow, owners of tho Clan lino of steamers, to extend their service to Australia-(says tho "Melbourne Index"). Arrangements have been made for the Clan liners to trade regularly to Australia, returning to London and Continental ports. The steamer inaugurating the line willbo tho Clan Macmillan. .The fleet sailing under the Clan flag consists of close on 40 steamers. The M'Arthur Shipping and Agency Co., Ltd., havo been appointed agorits in Australia for the line. The M'Arthur Company has also been appointed managing agents in Australia for the Gulf Line, Ltd., and the Nautilus Steam Shipping Co., Ltd. The steamers belonging to these owners will continuo to trade regularly between Australian ports, Manila, Hong-ICong, and Vladivostock.• lONIC FOR LONDON. Groymoutli., Until, 1.45 a.m. on Wednesday riothing out 'of the way > occurred until thel.vessel - was ; 70 miles north of Greymouth, when a-break-down occurred. Tho: vessel was hove to for about two hours, and after'temporary repairs were effected her course was set for, Wolling- ■ £ ton. The chief engineer (Mr. Morgan) ; states . that the-mishap was done'to the bottom end connecting-rod breaking, and causing the con-" necting end brasses to fall into the crank.pit. The piston came -down on the bottoip of the , cylinder, cracked it round the bend, and broke the junkeririg; 'The jar also broke the main' discharge pipe at the flanjre where it is bolted on to tno column. Immediately this occurred the connecting-rod was disconnected, the pis-, ton-rod was left up by the crosshead, and the low-pressure valve was drawn. The main dis- '• charge pipe was shored up, and once again the . Petone was under steam. . Under these adverse ' conditions the Petone maintained an average speed of seven knots an hour. The main hindrance to' increasing the speed was in' keeping the main discharge pipe tight. It is expected that tho fracture will occupy some time in putting to rights again. As mentioned yesterday, the Petone was only recently delayed in Lyttelton about two months \ while repairs, following on a breakdown; wera effected. ■ The Mapourika was fixed to leave Westport at 10 o'clock last night for Nelson and Wet lington. -, A preliminary inquiry will be held into tho circumstances concerning the fire on tha . steamer Pateena. It is expected that the minor repairs being carried out oh the Kaipara will be completed C early next week, and tlie vessel then proceeds to Auckland for loading purposes. At 8,30 a.m. yesterday the coastal steamer Defender left Hokitika for Wellington via Greymouth. She left the latter port at J p.m.' for ; Wellington,- and-- after. 1 aischarginj ; here returns to Hokitika.
