FOWLS IN THE CITY.
PROPOSED NEW BY-LAW; ; An ancient grievance was brought up before the City Council last night, when the Abattoirs, Milk Supply, and Public Health Committee reported , that they were' of opinion that it was-undesirable that a fowl yard of such magnitude as the olio at Cuba Street' should be allowed to remain in such a close residential area,, and suggested that tho by-laws should be so amended as to restrict the area' within which fowl runs would bo 'allowed. »- Councillor Shirtcliffe, in -moving, the adoption of the report, said .that the .committee, had visited the yard;.in conjunction :?with Inspector Doylp and Dr. Frengley, I ;. While, lie thought the fowl yard, as such", '• complied entirely with tho by-laws, and could hardly bo kept in bettor order .than it'was, he thought the general feeling of the comriiitteo was that in a close residential area'it was undesirablo that a fowl yard of such extent should' bo permitted;' lii hot weather there must be an Unpleasant odour, from tho place. ' : The Mayor asked what difleror.ee thero was between fowl runs and places where fowls wore coopcd up 1 behind-shops. . He believed that some of tlio latter were a far worse nuisance. Ho supposed that they would hear the full reasons of tho committee when tho by-law came down. It sperned to him that it was more- important to regulate the number of fowls than rpstrict the size of yards, but the matter would come-up again.- .. The report was adopted.
