CITY COUNCIL.

REPORTS OF COMMITTEES. Tho City Council met yesterday. Present: Tho Mayor (tho Hon. T. W. Hislop), councillors Luke, Smith, Cohen, Ballinger, Hales, Shirtoliffo, Biss, Fletcher, M'Laren, Carmichael, Hindmarsh, Morrali, Murdoch, and Fisher, M.P. The Baths and City Reserves Committee recommended That tho application of tho Wellington Benevolent Institution for the uso of a portion of Town/Belt Section 46, approximate area 4 acres, adjoining their section, bo granted, tho rent to bo £1 per annum. That tho application of Mr. E. W. Arnold,' on bohalf of the Wallace Testimonial Fund, for the uso of the Newtown Park for a gamo of football during October, and for permission to sell tickets for the match, bo granted, provided tho ticket sellers keep not less than 20 yard's from the gates. That several applications for permission to train for running on the Kelburne Park be not granted. That accounts amountiug'-to £19 18s.-3d. be passed for payment. That the Council agree. to erect a fence at Mortimer Tcrrace, under the Fencing Act, and pay half tho cost-. That the application of Messrs. P. Hutson and Company for permission to. take clay from a portion of Section 35, Town Belt, bo granted, subject to the conditions of tho City Engineer, tho applicants to deposit the sum of, £100 to guarantee the satisfactory carrying out of tho requirements of tho City Engineer. Tho report was adopted. On the recommendation of tho By-Laws and Street Lighting Committee it was agreed:—That authority be given to the Electrical Engineer to erect two lamps at Oriental Crescent as soon as the private lighting wires are extended to Roseneath. That the Electrical Engineer's scheme for the improved street lighting of Brooklyn bo approved, the work to be carried out in conjunction with the private lighting when that is being' extended there. That Osram lamps be installed on all the City circuits as soon as tho lamps come to hand, and the lamps in the suburbs be replaced by Osram lamps after they have been installed- in the City for a short period. That a lamp bo erected at Lewisville Terrac-e as recommended by tho Electrical Engineer. . The Finance and* Property Committee recommonded: —That one half-week's rent be allowed Messrs. Stanton and Ashbury, corporation on account of drainago work interfering with their business. That the petitioners for a water cart for Brooklyn during the summer, months be informed that it is regretted that their application cannot be granted at tho present- time. That Messrs. Simmonds and Osborne bo informed that the council 'cannot consent to let the land at King Street for grazing purposes.' That the recommendations of the Superintendent of Reserves and the City Engineer in regard to wages of tlioir staff bo adopted. That accounts amounting to £8291 9s. (including library" accounts amounting to £72 35.) be passed for payment. The report was adopted. It was recommended by the Power Stations and Tramways Committee: —That the salary Mr. W. J. O'Meara, of tho Tramway Cash Office staff, bo increased from £117 to £127' per annum. That in future dispatchers work the same hours and be paid tne same salary as inspectors. That accounts amounting to £1019 13s. 3d. be oassed for payment. The '."ommitteo reported that they had accepted the tender of the British Thomson Houston Company, Ltd., -for alternatingmeters. The report was adopted. ; -It was decided to accept tho lowest tender for 1000 metal filament-lamps.
