TROUT FISHING SEASON.

. OPENS TO-DAY. There is every indication of fine weather prevailing to-day for the opening of the trout fishing season. Streams visited yesterday are in good fishing order, although considerably lower than is usually the case at the commencement of the season. Both the Manawatu and Wairarapa trains, .which left Wellington yesterday, hail a fair sprinkling of the angling fraternity as passengers, who were easily recognisable by . their familiar creels. . The more unfortunate followers of the gentle art, who are'unable .to got off from work to-day on probably the "somebody's funeral" excuse, can be pictured hurrying to get in two, hours' fishing this morning, and likewise repeating the performance again to-night./ This enthusiasm, however, usually disappears after the first two or three days cf the season, and the majority of anglers have all the sport they require on their week-end excursions. ; A visit- to the Kaiwarra Stream yesterday elicited the fact that someone had been there'for. other, reasons than marking down good trout. The stones for a' considerable distance had been overturned, apparently in Bearch of creepers. The creeper is, as everyone knows, a; deadly bait early in the season, and what is more, it is an unsportsmanlike way- of angling. Any angler using' two standard patterns of artificial fly (red tipped Goyernor and ordinary march brown) early in the season is fairly certain of securing a good'catch in a skilful manner.' During the fishing season a column devoted.'to angling will appear in-each Saturday's issue, under the heading of "Field and Stream," and authentic contributions relative to the sport addrossed to "Dry Fly" will .be very acceptable. (BY TELECKArn—riIKSS ASSOCIATION.) Christchurch, September 30. Judging by present indications tho fishing season will open to-morrow under the most favourable auspices. Tho weather has been of the best for quite a spell, though a little too bright to entirely satisfy tho keenest disciples of Walton. Tho latest report received by tho Tourist Office was to the effect that'all the Canterbury rivers aro clear and in'good order for fishing. Last year the mouth of the.Selwyn was in rather an indifferent state'for anglers. The late floods, however, scoured it out,, and it is now in excellent condition for fishing. A largo number of local a,nglers intend going out to the rivers to-morrow to inaugurate the season, and on Saturday another big contingent will be whipping the streams.
