' THE TALISMAN' MINE. ; The inenibers of tho local' committoe'' (Dr. Knight and Mr. Weston) state that Mr, Bigelow, tho mechanical expert to Mossrs. Bewick, Moreriig and Co., having inspected the' jnine is fully satisfied that tho thirteenth level can be unwatered, and tho Talisman shaft sunk to tho fourteenth level with the assistance of a sinking pump/ . This' latter,, with the. pumps li&w at the wine, will, Mr.-.Bigelow says, be sufficient .to deal with all. the; v/ater. encountered in the. levels, and should enablo development work to bo resumed in the thirteenth level within a few months. This - additional plant-should" not cost moro'than .£2OOO. -Ifadopted, this scheme will solve the problem of the development of the Bonanza section at once. Ib addition, however,- ia permanent scheme is suggested by which the .Woodstock shaft will be sunk to the depth of- 600 ft. from river lovel, and connect with the fourteenth lovel from the Talisman shaft. The Woodstock shaft would then be equipped with a Cornish pump capable of dealing with all the water that could reasonably bo expected from either the Crown or Talisman workings. This scheme when completed would enable the present pumps in the Talisman shaft, to bo dispensed with, and the Cornish pump would bo worked at less cost than the presont ones, which aro driven by compressed air. Of course, this latter scnome would take about two years to complete, but-when completed would ciiablo tho mine to be worked more economically and 011 a more extensive scale than heretofore, notably in the prospecting of-the Woodstock section, and tho-ground to I lie north-sido of the Wnitawhota Stream.- As, howovoi;. the temporary fiohenjo would enable the Bojr.Mwa sootion to bo divclaufld dova to th« fouxUeath Uvel, shua.

holders should have no reason to coiriplain about delay. It is now stated to be pertain that tho water will not rise beyond Ho. 12 level; there is plenty of ore in sight above that level to keep the battery going, aid to maintain ail average of 415,000. a month. \ The shareholders will, it is contended, find a", few months hence, when .No.. 13 level "is |unwhtered, that they will have lost very little by the difficulties of tho past few weeks.' The fact that Mr. Bigelow was the. expert •irho designed tho battery and the treatment'pllnt of the Alaska Treadwell mine, which ranlcstin .importance, with the Waihi, should' be of Interest to shareholders, and satisfy theui that "the best will be done on their behalf. \ . THAMES DEEP LEVELS. 1 ,-(nr TEt-EGEiPH.—SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.) 1 Auckland, September 25. j In connection with the Thames Deep Level! development, it will be remembered that ii scheme, to project a crosscut at the 1000 ft. 1 leVel, from tho Queeii of Beauty shaft to tho 1 ■Saxon shaft, and thenco to the Old Big Pump, shaft, has been approved by tho Deep Levels', Committee and also by the managers of tho various mines concerned. An alternative scheme was recently submitted by Mr. H. H. Adams to the committee, under which it was ' proposed that tho crosscut at the' IOOOft.- level should be put in from the Queen of Beauty shaft in a straight line to the Kurariui-Culedonian shaft. Mr. Adams's scheme has been submitted to the 'mine managers, who liavo now notified the com, mitteo that they consider their owii scheme tobo better adapted to the general interests of the field. . . . .With regard to tho apportionment, of '■ cost, tlie committee has decided that, instead of tho companies using the deep level development being called, upon to contribute 10 per cent, on all gold won bolow the 600 ft. level to a common fund, they shall contribute 5 per cent.
