September 23, 9.50 p.m.) k Melbourne, September 23. , In the House of Representatives tho Prime Minister, Mr. Deakin, in reply to a/question said that no formal invitation had . been sent to tho British fleet to visit Australia; .but for a long time successive Australian Governments had conveyed to tho Admiralty the general desire of the people of Australia for such a visit, and tho certainty of a cordial welcome. He thought it unlikely that RearAdiniral Sir Percy Scott's squadron of cruisers would bo diverted hero from South Afrioa.
