HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.
HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL. A special meeting of the Hutt Borough Council was held last night to consider the agreement with regard to the new pipe and traffic bridge. There were present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. T. A. Peterkin), Councillors Russell; Baldwin, Ward, O'Sullivan, Hodgins, Wildsmith, Hughes. Ross, and Judd. Some considerable discussion took place with regard to the statement that the Petono Borough had contributed £1000 towards the construction of the pipe and traffic bridge. •»It was the general opinion that no special privilege should bq allotted to Pctone as regards tramway rights. Tho Government contribution was £1000. Tho board resolved that tho agreement bo not signed unless the clauso giving Petono solo tramway rights bo deleted, or that tho Hutt Borough be granted equal rights. GAS QUESTION. Councillor Baldwin asked whether tho council had decided to go on with the proposed gasworks, or was it proposed to tako a half interest in tho Potono works? Tho alternative was a poll of tjie ratepayers of tho Hutt. In tho event of joining witu Petono as partner with n half sharo it would bo necessary to raiso a loan of £13,000. Councillor Hodgins moved "That tho necessary stops bo taken to raiso a loan of £2500 in addition to tho amount authorised for the erection of gasworks." • After some discussion, Councillor Ross suggested that tho amount bo increased to £3000. This was agreed to by tho mover. It was pointed out that a spocial raoeting was necessary to consider and pass tho proposal. ' _ ' A meeting will bo held on Monday ovening next to consider th.o subject.
