'At 'the inquest; members of the- search • party who-recovered the, body were vory decided, about the hardship and injustice the settlers, suffered in the backblock's. They -had taken,up their sections about three years ago, the sections being well loaded for roads and bridges. So far, tho Government; had not provided a bridgo arid very few roads. The jury added a rider to their ' verdict calling the Government's attention to the want of a bridgo over the 'river, v '■ : t ' r \ ... A Test of Endurance.,, .. returning from the Avondale Races oni Saturday evening,'.. Joseph Johnson fell off the. train, evidently unnoticed. He lay alongside the track for some time, and then seeing lights in a house made his wiiy towards the place. The man slept in a shed all night,' and yesterday morning, though suffering , terribly, walked to . his home at Ponsonby. He was admitted to the Auckland District Hospital about midday, and was found to .have sustained a-fracture of the-skull and an injury to his arm. During the afternoon Johnson was operated on, and is progressing favourably.' t
