COAL MINE TROUBLE.
. .. THREE MEN PAID OFF. (HI TKLEOEAPH-—SPECIAL COEBESPONDENT.) Dunedin, September 21. ' Tho need of reducing the number of employees during tho dull season led to somo friction between the Jubilee Coal Company (Green Island) and their workmen last Saturday. A few days before the company discharged threo miners because the demand for coal is poor. The union representatives on Saturday interviewed the employers with a view of getting tho men kept at work. All tho workers wore prepared to share tho work. Tho employers did not favour tho proposal, and pointed out that trade was dull. Some hands had ,to be discharged, and tho threo men paid eff were not married. Tho .union representatives mentioned that the employees would not 1 work on Monday unloss tho discharged threo were accommodated. ' Tho , Labour Department officials eased the position, and prevailed upon tho company to provide work for tho three employees for another fortnight in order that they might have a chance to mako arrangements to got employment elsowhero. TARATU MINE. (DV TELEOEAPH—PEESS ASSOCIATION.) Dunedin, September 21. Twenty-six coal miners m Taratu mine, who gave notice of their intention to leave .their employment, left on Saturday. The company expect to bo ablo to fill tho vacancies beforo long. A uumber of men are still working in the mino. Tho new award came into force to-day.
