Encounter arrived from Wellington yesterday, evening, and will remain in port for a week.i BY THE KAKAMEA. f The same company's steamer Karamea, which left London on September i for Port Chalmers and Lyttolton, is carrying 3300 tons of cargo for the former port ana 750 tons for the latter. She is due at Pert Chalmers about October 22.
THE INDRAVELLI. Messrs. Johnston and Company adviso that the Canadian-New Zealand trader Indravelli, which -left Vancouver on September 3, is coming to .Wellington by lvay of Suva and Auckland. She is due here about the end of the month. • UNION COMPANY'S SERVICE. ALTERATIONS' SEPTEMBER' TIMETABLE. The Warrimoo withdraws from the Union Company's timetable running for survey and overhaul at Lyttelton on Friday, September 25, her run to Melbourne being taken by the Waikare, which will .wait at Wellington till the Wednesday afternoon; connecting with the Warrimoo, for passengers and cargo from Sydney for Dunedin and Bluff. Tlio Talune, arriving at Auckland from Rarotonga and Tahiti on September ■ 24, will leave for Wellington direct tlio following cay, and take up the Waikaro's run hence on Monday, September 27, for Napier, Gisborne, and Auckland. Sha will then continue in the Dunedin-Auckland service. The Manapouri will proceed to Suva and Levuka from Auckland ou September 30,' in place of the Hauroto. IN VERT AY ARRIVES. WILL DOCK IN NEW ZEALAND. Yesterday morning the tramp steamer Invertay, from New York, via Durban and Auckland, arrived in port. While three miles oft Cnne Agulhas she struck an unknown object, anuiput into Durban for .survey. Jn order to do this 90,000 cases of oil had to be lightered, and, on inspection, it was found that her bottom was severely damaged. Sunken rocks are supposed to have been the cause, and the injury, which was on the port side, narrowlv missed the ballast tank between N'os. 1 ami *2 holds. .The Jnvcrlny has arrived safely from South Africa, having only n lemporarv plate over the hole in her hull, and while in New Zealand she will dock at either Lyttelton or Auckland to have permanent repairs effected. , HER LAST VOYAGE. Shortly after six o'clock yesterday morning Jhe Blackball Coal Company's hulk Blackwall left Lyttelton for Wellington on probably her last sea-going trip, in low of the powerful tug Canterbury, and should, weather and circumstances permitting, arrive here this evening. THE RIPPINGnAM GRANGE. A notice on the telegraph board at the General Post Office reports that the F -11.-S. liner liippingham Grange passed Cape loulwind yesterday at 4.30 p.m., going north. Tho vessel loft Liverpool on .Inly 25 for Wellington direct, and will probably reach here late this afternoon. THE ARAIIURA. Heavy-weather on tho Greymouth bar is detaining the Arahura, and her prospect of getting away last night was very doubtful. It was expected, however, that she would sail on this morning's tide, and call at Westport. arid Nelson, omitting Picton this week. Under ordiiiacy circumstances she should arrive hero to-morrow. • THE MARJORY GLEN. The barque Marjory Glen, from Liverpool, is now fully due at Wellington, having set out for this port. 128 days ago. The vessel is making an exceptionally long passage for a barque, although tho barqucutine Renfield occupied a few days longer on her passage from Liverpool to Wellington. THE TAIERI TRANSACTION. Christchurch exchanges report that Captain Holm, senr., is at present in Lyttelton for tho purpose of taking command of the Union Company's steamer Taieri, which they report has been purchased by tho Maoriland Shipping Company. Inquiries made locally only elicit the information that, with regard to the transaction, nothing further than reported yesterday has'transpired. IMPORTS FOR THE DOMINION. THE MAORI'S CARGO. The local agents advise that the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's liner Maori, which left Liverpool on September 5, for tho Dominion, has on board the following cargo for discharge at ports in the order named:—For Auckland, IGOO tons; for Wellington, 2000 tons; for Lyttelton, 600 tons, and for Port Chalmers,, 800 tons. THE ANCHOR LINE. NEW STEAMERS BUILDING. Private advice received locally reports that Mr. J. Brown, of the Anchor Line S.S. Co., Nelson, was present at tho launching ceremony of the Patea Shipping Company's new steamer Arapawa. It is stated' that.Mr. Brown is arranging for tho building of two twin-screw steamers, capable of steaming 9J knots when loaded. Their dimensions will be, roughly, 150 ft; length, ,-md 26ft. beam, and they will be able to carry 450 tons deadweight on a draught of lUft. 3in. ■ "! THE ARAPAWA LAUNCHED. ' Tho "Glasgow Herald" of July 31 says:— "Messrs John Fullerton End Co., Paisley, launched yesterday a steel screw steamer, which they have built to the order of Mr." J. H. Williams, Wellington, New Zealand,- for tho Patea shipping trade.. Tho steamer was named Arapawa by Mrs. Bennett, Wellington, New Zealand. After the launch, luncheon was: sorved, at which Mr. Fullerton, senior partnerof the builders' firm; presided, whilo Mr. W. H, G. Bennett acted as croupier. Advice has Jieen received by the Union Company that 'tho Pukaki, from Lyttelton, was outside Greymouth bar yesterday,-and was expected to cross inwards last night. Being unablo to work Capo Saunders, the Government steamer Hinemoa arrived at Port Chalmers yesterday. She will await a favourable opportunity to call at Capo Saunders, and afterwards proceed to the Southern lighthouses. '.
