HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.
An entertainment containing items of some merit was given in the'. Oddfellows' Hall. Lower Hutt, last evening. The proceeds were in aid of St. James's Church funds. The programme included tableaux . vivants, songs, dances, amateur theatricals, aud recitations. The following ladies and gentlemen took part in the performance:—Mrs. Leighton, Misses Lee, Ajlport, Hayward, Kingdon, Heaton, Rix-Trot.t, Cliuue, and Yeats, Messrs. Strauchon, Heaton, Hayward, Glere, Natusch, Bell, Lambert, and Mayburg. The various items were well presented and enjoyed by a numerous audience. Mr. 11. AY. Bligli, White Cross lecturer, addressed a meeting of men and youths in tha Hutt Town Hall on "Tlio Dangers of Impurity." There was only a moderate attendance. ~ A number of business men of Petone held a meeting* in tho Oddfellows' Hall, and decided to -form a social club, and to register same under the Unclassified Societies Act. The club is to bo known as the Petone Commercial Club. Officers were elccted as follows:—Mr. T. M- Wilford,''M.H.R., patroii; Dr." .Ross, president: Mr. A. Cole and Dr. Harding, ' vice-presidents; Messrs. E. G, Jones,. H. J. Palmer, W. H; Cook, C. T. Lowin, A. Carter, arid R. P.' Smith, committee. Mr. D. G. I'raser was elected secretary,; and Messrs. J. G. Castle and I C. Harper auditors. The chairman announced that arrangements had been made to secure a pieca of ground and erect a suitable clubhouse on a splendid site at once. The club's prospects are very bright, fifty-five members being elected at the first meeting. Mr. Alfred .Coles occupied.' tho chair. . A splendid'. programme was submitted at the Oddfellows' Hall last evening'in aid of the' Petone Methodist Young Men's Bible .Class Building Fund., Mr. T. 51. "VVilford, M.H.R.. pequpied the chair. The Petone Brass Band and the-Wesleyaii,Orchestra,'under tho baton of Mr.. Sibun also "rendered several selection's. The following contributed to the jirogrammo:—Misses Blakey (2), O'Meara," Brittain, JTlanagan, Newton,, and M'Ewen, arid Messrs; F. Cray, W. Silbun, and Newton. The Rev.' Mr. 'Williams received a very hearty-welcome at a social gathering in the Baptist Church, Petone, oil Tuesday evening. The Rev. ,J. presided, arid in welcoming tho Rev. . Mr. Williams to Petono said'he looked o,n him and himself as twins, 'because ' when fhe' (th'e_ speaker) comrnenccd ' his ministry ;• at. Nicholson, .Alexander, Edmeader,..and' Mr. Low; . During the evening tho choir rendered several pieces, arid Miss Flanagan, recited. On rising to speak Mr. .Williams was well received. .
