CRAIN WEIGHTS ON RAILWAYS.
DUPLICATE CERTIFICATES WANTED; ' The following question and answer concerning tho charge made to farmers for certificates of weights of grain weighed at the railways have passed in tho House of Repre- ! . sentatives between Mr. Thomson, M.P., and tho Minister for Railways:— " Question: "Mr. Thomson to ask the Minister for Railways whether he will supply duplicates of grain-weights to farmers. [Note.—lf tho concession would increase the work of tho Department, farmers are prepared to pay a reasonable fee for tho privilege.]" ■ Minister's Reply.—''Farmers who require certificates of tho weights of grain can obtain tho same on payment of the charge fixed by the regulations'. Tho ' Department . has never objected to supplying weights on fcheso conditions. What has hitherto been I askci for is tbat the Department should give two certificates of weight and charge for one. This 1. regret I cannot seo my way to agreo to. A considmblo amount of work is involved in testing and keeping railway weighbridges in repair and providing tho necessary machinery for recording and advising particulars of railway weights. For the chargo that is made the Railway Department performs' certain services, and the chargo is not excessive for such services. Where the consignor or tho consignee of grain or other goods sent over the railways requires to be furnished with a certificate of weight, ■ this will be done; but for each cortificate furnished'to each person the gazetted charge will, of course, be made."
