HUTT POLICE COURT. The usual sitting of the Hutt Court took place yesterday. Dr. M'Arthur, S.M., presided, and with him on the Bench were: Messrs. T. A. Peterkin and Jno. Cudby, J.P.'s. Alexander Mathieson, charged with using obscene language, was represented by Mr. W. Cracroft Wilson. Accused pleaded guilty, and was fined 40s. and costs. A number of school attendance cases were dealt with. Geo. H. Hall was fined ss. and costs, and A. Puketapu and )Ym. Kell wero also fined. _ ' v . A charge against Francis Collier (Mr. Richmond) of keeping an unregistered dairy was dismissed, and costs were allowed to defendant. Fredk., Blacklidge was charged with failure to maintain his wife and children. Mr, Ayson appeared ■ for defendant's wife, made application for a separation order and maintenance. . There were three children, ranging fr,om four years to thirteen months. It was stated that complainant had only received about 10s. during each of the last two months. The Hutt Borough Council had assisted her with board and keep for some weeks past. An order was made for summary separation, the wife to have the custody of the children, and defendant to pay 20s. per week maintenance, and £1 10s. costs. Bertha Wilder, £2 35., costs ss. Dr. M'Arthur, the presiding S.M. made some very stringent remarks on the prevalence of obscene language at football matches. The offence appeared to follow not so much the players as the "camp followers" of the game. Ho had recently travelled on the Main Trunk Railway, and on the same train there travelled , a'football team, and its followers. He bad heard very, little to equal the language which '• he 1 had listened to on this trip. Ho did not say the actual players of the team were tho offenders. It seemed that honour was reserved for tho "ba,rrackers" who followed the'team's tour.

HUTT FIRE BRIGADE.. The monthly mooting of the Hutt Fire Brigade was hold last night, Captain Slinn being in the chair. The secretary reported that Mr. J. T. Hawthorn had donated £2'to the brigade's recreation fund. Some discussion took place with regard to an offer made by a resident at Blackbridge of the temporary use. of a- section for. a fire station. The opinion of the meeting was that the Borough Council should approach the owner of the section with regard'to'a specific offer in writing. The. following officers ..were nominated for the. ensuing year:—Captain, Mr. T. Slinn; lieutenant, Mr. G.' M'llvride; secretary, Mr. W. H. Baldwin; foreman, Messrs. E. Stou{),.G. Bradley, and E. Straud; assistant foreman, Mossrs. Hobman, B. Fleet, G. Bradley, E. Straud. A ballot for two auditors to the brigade brought four entries, and a second ballot was taken owing to a tie. Messrs. S. * Straud and F. Greig wero evontually elected, : The Sunday School building at St. John's (Trenthani). was filled to overflowing on Monday • evening last, when the combined parishioners of Upper. Hutt, Trentham,, Silvoratream, and Whitomah's Valloy assembled to bid .adieu to their, vicar. (Rev.. Cecil Smith) 'on the eve of his departure j for Otaki. The presentation of a purse; of sovereigns . to Mr. Smith fell ,to ; the lot of Mr. Kemp, who referred in" graceful terms to.Mri-Smith's ministry,) among, them. during the past six years'. . Mr., Smith thanked all concerned .'in making' the demonstration in his honour, and hoped the now minister, (the Rov. J.-'H. SykeS, of .Levin,- who wduld arrive in December) .would be well received. The evening was enli voiied by songs and speeches, and all. present sang "Auld Lang Syne" at the close. . On Frida,y : evening last the people of Akatarawa belonging .to Mr. Smith's parish presented him with a silver inkstand, and for Mrs. Smith a silver jam spoon' and pearl-handled butter knife, at a social' given in his honour, whilst the Upper Hutt Sunday School children presented Mr. Smith 'with a cheque.
