VICTORIA COLLEGE DEBATING SOCIETY.

$ A meeting of the Victoria Collego Debating Society was held at tho College on Satur-. day evening, Mr. C. H. Taylor being in tho' chair. The motion discussed was "That tho time has not yet arrived for Australia to possess a separate navy." Tho movers were Messrs. A. Fair and E. Armit, and tho opposers Messrs. EL F. O'Leary and J. M. Hogben. Five other speakers also took part in tho debate, all being in support of the motion, which was carried by- 13 votes to 6. Professor D. K. Picken, M.A., the presidont of tho society, judged the debate, and placed tho best five speakers in tho following order: Messrs. A, Fair, E. Armit, G. H. Gibb, J. M. Hogben, and M. H. Oram. Mr. H. F. O'Leary did not talce part in the competition. At tho next meeting of the society, to bo held in tho Concert Chamber of tho Town Hall on Saturday, Septembor 12, at 8 p.m., tho annual competition for tho Plunket medal will bo held. There will be eight competitors, who will each speak for twelve minutes upon some man or woman of noto in history, the subject of tho speech boing chosen by tho individual competitors. The names of tho speakers are Messrs. E. Armit, H. E. Evans, J. M. Hogben, J. Mason, M. H. Oram, A. M. Salek, D. S. Smith, and 0. H. Taylor. j
