CHILD'S BODY FOUND. . (BY TELEGRAPH —PBESS ASSOCIATION.) Chrlstchurch, August 30. The body of a female child, much decomposed, was found in Hagley Park on Saturday, evening by the 1 police. - An inquest was held to-day. Chief Detective Bishop stated that he found the body on the bank of the Avon River to the" south of Victoria Lake, lying two or three feet away frpm the river, and, only a few yards ' off the recognised track. The body had no clothing, but was partly covered with dry leaves, which had dropped from tho surrounding trees. Dr. Symes, who niado a post-mortem, said the' body was that of a fully matlirod female child, which appeared to havet breathed a short time. There were no apparent marks of violence. The child had probably been dead from three to five weeks. The jury returned a verdict that there was no evidence to show the cause of death. .

INQUEST AT DUNEDIN. Dunedln, August 30. At the inquest on the body of Jamea Carter, found dead in bed at Sawyer's Bay with i pea 'riflo by his sido,_ and a bullet wound in his head, the medical evidenco showed that deceased had been treated for cancer in the tongue and the lower jaw. Deceased underwent an operation for this disease about a montli ago, but refused to submit to another. On Thursday, however, ho consented to go to Dunbdin the' following day for X-ray treatment. Tho jury returned a verdict that deceased died from a gunshot wound_ self-inflicted while in a state of temporary insanity.

A PECULIAR ACCIDENT. Wanganul, August 30. A man named Fraser, an attendant at the hospital, nearly lost his life yesterday. At about 11 o'clock two fishermen in a boat saw a man lying in tho water oil tho river boaoh near tho hospital, The man was waving a hand, and the fishermen on going to his assistance' found him almost drowned. Tho man explained that he had felt ill, and went to tho beach fbr a walk, when ho became dizzy and fell down. Ho was powerless to move, and tho rising tido covered hire. When found tho man was unable to use his legs.. and had to be carriod to the hospital
