- News has been received from Auckland that Mr. Bert' Gilbert, the comedian of the "Humpty Dmnpty" Pantomime Company, who sustained an accident to one of his eyes in Auckland, is progressing satisfactorily towards recovery. The Parliamentary party, which is to visit Wairarapa on Saturday next (writes our Wairarapa correspondent) will include the Hon. Jas. Carroll (Nativo Minister), the Hon. J.'. A. Millar (Minister for Labour), the Hon. A. R. Guinness (Speaker) and Messrs. Poland, Greonslado, Ross, and Heke. / Mr, R. G. Cavendish Bentinck writes as follows in tho "Church Times" (London): — "May I remind homo and colonial readers that next year is the cpntenary of the birth of Bishop Geo. Aug. Selwyn? Surely steps will bo taken to arrange a simultaneous.commemoration 'of tho pioneer work lie so bravely undertook'in New Zealand." Tho death is._ announced at Bahia Blanca, in South America, on Tuesday last, of Mr. Albert Beck, fifth son of Mrs. Margaret Beck, of Cambridge Terrace, Wellington. Mr. Beck, who was in business at Bahia Blanca as an olcctrician, purposed coming home for a holiday at Christmas, and letters received by his people of late indicated that ho was in tho best of health. Deceased was an, enthusiastic athlete, and was a member of tho Ponoke Football Club for several years, and also played the Association game. Ho was also a yachtsman; and at one time sailed tho half-rater Ruru, and was a member of this crow of tho yachts Rona and. the Atalanta. Mr. Beck wont to South Africa with the Eighth Contingent, and was mentioned in the dispatches for meritorious conduct during the concluding stages of tho war. Deceased leaves a number of relatives in Wellington. Tho remains of tho late Mr. H. D. Crawford were interred at Karori Cemetery oii Saturday morning, the obsequies being attended by representatives of every class in tho community. The funeral procession was a very long one, and included members of both Houso of tho Legislature, representatives of tho Civil Servico, his Worship tho i Mayor of Wellington, members of tho City' Council, and heads of tho corporation departments, liis Worship tho Mayor of Miramar (Mr. C. J. Crawford) brother of tho deceased gentleman), borough..councillors, and staff. There was a largo number of wreaths, one of the most expressive tributes to tho memory of the late Mr. Crawford being a garland from the poorer children resident in Abel Smith Streot, to whom he had. in tho past, shown many kindnesses. The pallbearers wore Mr. James Coutts'' Crawford (son of tho deceased), Messrs. A. D. and C. J. Crawford (brothors), and Messrs. George Charles, and Campbell Pearce. Tho Rev. G.' P. Davys, Vicar of St. Peter's, conducted tho burial service.
