WAIRARAPA HUNT GLUE'S STEEPLEGHASE .MEETING. : KURANUI WINS THE TARATAHI . STEEPLES.. The annual steeplechase meeting of tho Wairarapa Hunt' Club was hold on the Tara-tahi-Cartertori,Racing Club's course at Clare--villo yesterday. The weather was well nigh perfect, and in consequence there was a large crowd present. Notwithstanding the recent rains, the track was in good order, and interesting sport was the rule throughout tho day. The fields wore largo in all tho events save- tho Taratahi Steeplechase, in vfliich only three horses weiit to tho post, but the finish in this race was more than usually exciting, tho competitors passing the winning p'ost almost abreast. Tho winner turned up iu Kuranui, who won tho Woodlands Hunt Club Steeplechaso at Pahiatua three weeks ago. Clovial, a fino stamp of' hunter, won tho Ladies'. .Bracelet and tho Hunters' Hurdles, and another double winner was Full Rate's aged brother Overrate, who accounted for both the hack flat races in good stylo. Several mishaps occurred in the jumping events, but 110110 of them was attended with serious results to horses or riders. Thirteen bookmakers were licensed by tho club at a feo of five guineas, and as only a couple of actual favourites prevailed,, their business must have been profitable.. Tho fixture was rin, undoubted success, and tho various officials concerned in the management all carried out their duties in an efficient manner. Both of them ■ wero very tired, owing to the strong pace set throughout, fon which Rapanui ana King John were mainly answerable.
