COMPENSATION COURT.
LAND TAKEN AT KAIWARRA. CLAIM AGAINST THE CROWN. The case of Halt and Bowdon v. the Minister for Railways was mentioned in the Compensation Court on Saturday. The Court consisted of Mr., Justice Chapman (Presi-,
dent) and Mr.'T. K l . Macdonald (assessol for the claimants), and Mr. A. H. Miles (assessor for the respondent).
This was a claim for £1300 compensation in respect of certain land taken by tlio Crown at Kaiwarra for railway purposes and in respect of alleged injury to the balanco of claimants' property. Evidence was heard on Thursday, when tho. Court adjourned until Saturday. ' His Honour said that tho award of the Court was to bo £500 on all accounts. Tho assessors' fees were fixed at 14 guineas each, and each party was required to pay its own assossor. The award would not bo formally made that day, as the parties were not .present, and tho Court would stand adjourned until Octobor 5. : If both parties agreed ho, as President of* the Court, would make tho award [at an earlier date. • '••••Mr. Morison i appeared on behalf of tho claimants and Mr. Myers for tlie respondent
MAGISTRATE'S. COURT.
POLICE CASES. . (Before Dr." A. M'Arthur, S.M.) Timothy Allen pleaded guilty to a charge of having, on August .20, being a duly articled teaman oh the Tyser liner Indradevi, unlawfully absented himself from the vessel without leave. Defendant was convicted and sentenced to seven days' imprisonment, and ordered to bo placed on board his vessel at Napier. Defendant was also ordered to pay costs, 10s.On a chargo of insobriety tho same' defendant was convicted and discharged. , Later in the' morning another seaman off the Indradevi, Patrick Driscoll, appeared before Messrs. Da'nks and Davis, Justices, on a chargo.of absenting, himself .from the vessel without leave. Defendant-was convicted and sentenced to seven days' and ordered to be placed on board tho vessel, and to pay costs, 10s. Clara Branigan, John Fullerton, and Daniel Young, alias "Cucumber," wore each convicted and fined 205., in default seven days' imprisohmont, for drunkenness. John Fleming, . similarly charged, was remanded for medical treatment. Four first offenders were convictcd and discharged, and one wa.s convicted and fined 55., in default 24 hours' imprisonment. ; . A BY-LAW CASE. George I. Elliott pleaded guilty to a charge of having, on August. 8, allowed a vehicle to remain standing in Donald M'Lean . Street for a longer time than necessary for loading and unloading. A conviction and •fine of Ss. and costs 75., in default 48 houra' imprisonment, was imposed.
