MAORI LANDS,

A NEW PROPOSAL. PETITION TO PARLIAMENT. As an outcome of the recent ConferencS of tho Maori Association a petition, signed by about 40 representative Natives in all parts of New Zealand, Las been presented to Parliament, of which the principal clauses may be thus translated. "Yours petitioners pray that the Native i Land Settlements Act, 1907, bo ropealed, which empowers the Commissioners appointed under it to confiscate ("muru") the land of the Maoris. They also pray' that all- Government and private' purchases of Native lands under existing laws shall immediately cease, and that the Tight to administer their own lands shall bo vested, in tho Maoris, as follows:— "(a) The Natives shall have power to leasa their lands either By private treaty or by public auction. "(b) Tho Natives shall have power to raise money on their lands by mortgage, with a view to improvement of their holdings, on condition that three-fourths of the amount .raised must bo spent iu improvements on the land. • _ "(c) That a branch office shall be established in Wellington for the purpose of ad- h vancing money to the Maoris on their laud, : tho officers to see that three-fourths of tho money advanced is spent upon improvements."
