—0 DAVIS CUP: THE UNITED STATES TEAM. (by telegram—ritEss association—coPYßianT.) London, August 20. The United States team which is to meet the visiting English team, in tbo preliminary tie for the Davis Cup, is AVm.. A. Larned, Beals 0. 'Wright, ]?. B. Alexander, and H. H. Hackett. The preliminary cup tie between Great Britain and the Unitod States will bo played in the United States, M. J. G. Ritchie and J. G. Parke representing Britain. It was hoped in Australia that the British and United States teams would come to Australia to play tho preliminary tie, but the. longer trip has apparently been dropped on the ground of expense. The winners of the preliminary tie will come, to Melbourne to play tho Australian holders of the cup, probably early in November. The Davis Cup was won for Australia at the Wimbledon meeting in 1907 by N. E. Brookes (Victoria) and A. Wilding (New Zealand). The Americans, Beals C. Wright (included in the present United States team) and Karl Behr, did battle on that occasion for the United States, the Colonial' pair beating them -.by three matches to two. In 1907, William A. Larncd won the Outdoor National Championship of America; and In the Indoor Championships, F._ B. Alexander and H. H. Hackett retained the' doubles championship. ! Of the English team which is' to visit America, M. J. G. Ritchie won the gold medal at the Olympic sports, but many leading players did not compete. The champion of England is A. W. Gore. Last year, at, the Fitzwillian Open Tournament, J.'C. Parke' won the championship of Europe.
